Zach Hadel and Michael Cusack both seem to have a background in internet animation.
Hadel made short animations on YouTube under the name PsychicPebbles and also became quite popular on Newgrounds. One of his earliest works is Hellbenders. It's kind of like a low-budget web series. It has short episodes and absurd humor is all over it.
The same can be said for Michael Cusack. He has a project called Bushworld Adventures, which is a Rick and Morty parody. He gained some recognition through short animations on Newgrounds and YouTube.
These are the creators behind Smiling Friends, and the final result reflects their past animation work so much that it's one of the reasons I enjoy this absurd animation style.
As for Smiling Friends;
Despite being funny, some episodes deal with heavy themes like depression, personal collapse, and social media culture. Most of the characters don't really know what they want; they're usually strange, unhappy, and obsessive people.
The whole show feels like a collection of those weird short animations you randomly find on YouTube. The episodes are already around 10 minutes long. No matter how funny it gets, it still carries a slight sense of emotional weight and collapse underneath, but that only feeds the comedy. It doesn't drag you into loneliness or push you into those kinds of thoughts.
Pim is funny, lovable, sweet, and unbelievably optimistic. Most of the time he's the one who saves the day and manages to make the client happy through that optimism. And underneath that personality there isn't some deep trauma or hidden philosophy; he's just optimistic and sweet. Even that alone shows how much this show's characters feel like ideas that came out of short funny conversations between friends. Because in real life, whenever someone is extremely nice, it feels like there must be a reason behind it. But maybe someone can simply be good because they're good. I don't know if pure positivity really exists, maybe it does. Since Pim exists, I feel like there must be someone similar out there in real life too.
Charlie is one of the other rational main characters. But unlike Pim, you can feel how exhausted he is by life. Whether it's the way he talks, how he tends to think about himself first during situations, or how he doesn't want to chase after every problem; throughout the entire series he feels like one of the most realistic and relatable people in the show. Charlie isn't someone trying to save the world or help everyone. He's just trying to get through the day, and because of that he might be the character who resembles modern people the most.
I also want to talk about two other characters. Not that I want to do the other characters any injustice because they're all written so well. But these two are honestly the ones that carried the show for me.
The first one is Mr. Boss.
Unlike Charlie, Pim, and Allan, this guy has absolutely no predictability. I never knew what he was going to do, where he was going to go, or what he actually wanted, and I don't think I ever will. I don't even know exactly why he feels so funny. His absurdity, unpredictability, and complete instability somehow make him incredibly funny. Maybe this kind of humor feels simple to some people since unexpected things being funny is common nowadays, but it completely hooked me.
Where does the company get its money? How does it stay alive? Why did it adopt a goal like making people smile? — they kind of explain that in the Glep episode — but in a universe like this, looking for logic is pointless anyway. At the same time, everything involving this character only feeds the absurdity of the world even more. Nobody asks why the boss is like this. Actually, it's the same with many characters; nobody questions why they're the way they are. That leaves the viewer confused. It creates this feeling of, "Wait a second, am I the only one who doesn't understand any of this?" And I really liked that.
Smiling Friends için;
